Addicted or not?
This is an update for weeks 10-12 I do understand that there is no excuse for anything being late or even not turned in, however, its been quite complicated to figure out what to write in these blog posts. There haven't really been anything to update weekly and every now and then I can update the graph but there wouldn't be much a change weekly.
As this project is coming to an end, it has helped me realize not only the fact that we are addicted to our phones, but it was able to show me how much we are addicted to our phones. Just in this 12-week period alone our 'addiction' has gone up more. There is a built-in app for iPhones called Screen Time. It tells you how long you've spent on your phone that day, what apps you've used, how long you were on the apps, then it tells you your weekly totals. It also allows you to set time restrictions on certain apps. As the semester has gone by, we've noticed that our weekly averages have gone up. I think the reasoning's for the increased Screen Time is that: at the beginning of a new semester you're focused in all of your classes, you stay off your phone and pay attention in them, you do your homework at night, and you try to go to sleep early and be well-rested for the next day then you repeat. By the end of the semester you don't stay as focused in your classes, you're on your phone more in class because you're not paying attention, when you get home you go straight to your phone and don't care about homework, then you stay up late on your phone then you repeat. Our Screen Time started with the average f about 35 hours per week.. they now average at 50 hours per week. Throughout this project I've been given several suggestions. Some were to give my phone to my mom at night or to just leave it downstairs. I wasn't able to do those because I didn't feel comfortable with my phone not being near me at night and was afraid that I was going to be late the next day because I didn't have my alarm. My teacher also gave me a suggestion and it was to put a restriction on the times I was able to be on my phone. I tried it.. and it lasted less than 24 hours. I set the times from 6:00AM - 8:00PM. It was about 10:00PM when I had nothing to do and was bored. I started to get frustrated at the fact that I couldn't access social media so I just turned it off and I was good. This was an interesting experience and thank you to everyone who helped me!

Nope. There's nothing new other than the fact that they're just not caring anymore. I've tried getting them to go to sleep without their phone. I've tried getting them to go to sleep earlier. I've tried to stay off my own phone and to go to sleep earlier but it just doesn't work. When I do, I just end up being more tired the next day because it takes me forever to fall asleep.
I have taken all of my data, including the data that I had for the last graph, and compiled it all into another one to show how much of a difference there is. The last graph's results were 35.5% no phone and 64.5% phone at the three week mark.
This graph has 27.5% no phone and 72.5% phone at Week 8. As you can see, there is about a 10% difference for both sides but the phone side has went up. I think part of the reason we're spending so much more time on our phones within 5 weeks is because it's getting closer to the end of the school year meaning we are starting to lose focus in our homework/school work. The closer to the end of the year it gets, I think the differences will start to get greater because we're caring less and less about school and more about making plans for Summer and talking to friends rather than get sleep for school. Week of April 7thI got a new phone on Sunday and was able to start asking the questions again. I tried to ask from last week but nobody remembered when they went to sleep and only that they were on their phone every time they did. This update itself has proved already that we are addicted to our phones. I couldn't sleep when mine got taken away then broke. They knew they were on their phones every night and didn't know when they got off. Next week I'll have another graph with all the data I have but I assume it will look similar to the last one, maybe even worse. Week of March 31stSchool was back on meaning I started asking them the questions again but then my phone stopped working. I wasn't able to ask anybody questions because I ask them through text since I don't see them in school enough to ask. For this week I do not have any data because I wasn't able to ask them and I wasn't able to be on my phone until I got a new one. Week of March 24thBy this point I had forgotten completely about doing the blog updates. I had gotten my phone back but since it was spring break, I just stopped asking them until the next week. Week of March 17thThis was the week I got in trouble and got my phone taken away for a week. However, it helped me to see how addicted I am to my phone. I couldn't sleep at night because I was afraid that I'd oversleep without my alarm. When my mom woke me up I didn't get ready on time because I get ready listening to a certain playlist so when I hear a certain song I know it's time to go. School was boring because I couldn't text my friends throughout the day or listen to music while doing my work. Not having my phone also made me forget about my blogs and is the reason why I'm doing this huge update now.
I've taken all the data, combined it and this was my result. This is out of 32 results and spans over 12 days there have been a few times where I've forgotten to ask people the questions because we all have our days but I'm going to do better and remember to ask otherwise the project would just be a waste of time.
My project has been going on for about two weeks now. Unfortunately we're all still on our phones at night. There have been few nights here and there when one of us stays off of it but honestly I think it was more because they had a long day rather than because they were really trying to stay off. On my last post I was given a suggestion: give my phone to my mom at night or leave it down stairs. I cannot do that. At night is when I do everything. I text for FaceTime friends, catch up on social media, and do homework. Giving my phone to my mom would stop me not only from doing all of those things but then I would completely bore me and I'd just sit there all night.
Thanks to all the suggestions! Please offer more! Today will mark the first week since I've started my project. So far none of my friends have been able to stay off their phones at night and most of us are going to sleep around 12:00 AM on a school night and it's because were on our phones. The only reason we've been on them was because we were on social media or talking to someone on the phone.
I have a feeling that no matter how hard I try, I wont be able to break the habit. I've gotten too used to being on my phone at night that is it something that just happens. If I'm trying to go to sleep and my phone gets a notification, I'll get up to check it, even if it is 3:00 AM on a school night. My phone went off so I have to check it. |
